Simon James - Artistic Director\Goldwell National Artist\Master Stylist
An award-winning stylist, educator, and Goldwell National Artist, Simon James brings over two decades of elite experience to Obsidian Hair, Beauty and Soul. Recognized among the Legends of Canadian Hairdressing in 2024, Simon was one of 130 stylists chosen to represent the most influential voices in the history of Canadian hair. His career has been defined by creative excellence, industry leadership, and an unwavering passion for education.
Simon's signature colour work has graced Vancouver-based television and film productions, including Mistresses (ABC), iZombie (CW), Unreal (Lifetime), and The Daily. Honoured as both British Columbia Hairstylist of the Year and Canadian Texture Hairstylist of the Year, his editorial work has been featured in Salon Magazine, TV Week, and Vogue.com.
Renowned for effortless colour placements, bold blondes, precision haircuts, and high-impact transformations, Simon tailors every look to celebrate the uniqueness of the individual. With a calm, welcoming presence and deep technical expertise, he offers a true luxury experience from consultation to final look.
A passionate educator, Simon has designed and led national training programs across Canada and the United States, including at the prestigious Kao Salon Academies in Toronto and New York. He has also had the privilege of training Goldwell's North American Artistic Team.
After years at the forefront of Downtown Vancouver's salon scene, Simon returned to his hometown of White Rock to open Obsidian alongside his wife and business partner Aleksandra. Their vision: to bring world-class hair artistry, holistic luxury, and a culture of excellence to the City by the Sea.
Through Obsidian, Simon continues to nurture future industry talent while providing elevated, personalized service to every guest. Whether reconnecting with longtime friends or meeting new clients, his mission is simple. Create exceptional hair in a space that feels like home.

Aleksandra Mikolajczyk - Owner\Blonde Specialist\Extension Expert
Owner and a Stylist of 22 years, Aleksandra Mikolajczyk is the grounding force behind Obsidian Hair, Beauty and Soul. Born in Poland, Aleksandra moved to Calgary via Germany at the age of 7. She speaks 3 languages and is very connected to her European heritage. Aleksandra specializes in blondes and extensions.
At the age of 16, through a cosmetology scholarship, Aleksandra entered hair school and hasn’t looked back. She is classically trained and has 22 years of experience in the industry. She is incredibly passionate about connecting with her clients and bringing their confidence to the surface.
At the age of 22, she left Calgary to embark as an independent hairstylist in Vancouver. Aleksandra quickly gained a cult following, soon finding herself working behind the scenes at many of Vancouver’s most prestigious fashion events.
With a love for music festivals and a flair for entrepreneurship, she opened her first business at the annual Shambala music festival in the Kootenays, cultivating a creative team that crafted bespoke hairstyles for her fellow festival-goers. Aleksandra is excited to bring more than two decades of passion and experience to White Rock, along with her husband and business partner, Simon.
Aleksandra has a deep love for travel and spent much of her youth exploring the world. She has travelled to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe. She hopes to see every corner of the globe.
Aleksandra spends much of her time connecting with nature, deepening her understanding of her higher self and the pursuit of divine spirituality. Due to her love of art, she can often be found on the beaches of White Rock, searching for rare sea glass and gems to add to her mosaics. Never one to shy away from creativity, Aleksandra continues to find ways to stay inspired and, in turn, inspire her clients!

Meet Olivia — Senior Stylist
Downtown touch. Coastal soul.
After years working in Downtown Vancouver’s competitive salon scene, Olivia returns to her craft with a grounded, thoughtful approach and a genuine love for creating beautiful hair. Originally from Nova Scotia, she discovered her passion early, practicing on friends and family before pursuing her education at the Blanche Macdonald Centre.
She built her skills in Downtown Vancouver’s fast-paced, high-standard salon environment, later taking a short break to welcome her two young children. Now, with renewed energy and passion, Olivia is excited to blend her Downtown experience with the coastal energy of the city by the sea.
Clients appreciate her warm presence, attentiveness, and keen eye for detail. Olivia specializes in highlights, dimensional colour, and precision cuts, thoughtfully tailoring each look to enhance her clients’ natural beauty and lifestyle.
Olivia loves working collaboratively with her clients to create styles that feel polished, confident, and true to who they are.
